Digital Graffiti, Alys Beach

The Scenic 30A community of Alys Beach hosts the Digital Graffiti Festival, transforming its white walls into a large-scale canvas for immersive art projections. This unique event, lauded by National Geographic, explores the intersection of art and architecture.

Concept

The idea behind "Garden View" was to craft an experiential artwork that explored the contrast between our self-perception and societal expectations.

Design Process

Process
The artwork's backdrop is comprised of a collection of 1950s and 1960s magazine ads and illustrations, depicting societal ideals of the perfect woman, family, man, and even perceived adversaries. This backdrop symbolizes the continuous bombardment of these expectations encountered daily, whether outside the home, on television, or while gazing at our phones.

More Process

I proceeded to blend these elements, merging the natural with the artificial, juxtaposing flowers with cigarette ads showcasing bright smiles and adorning looks from wives to husbands and children.

Even More Process
I then layered identical compositions on top of each other and created a track matte for each layer. I changed the scale and saturation on the upper composition layers and this created the “glitch” appearance.

Even More

(Please Excuse Dork Talk) Lastly, I ran a camera input into Touchdesigner, removed the background, added an edge blur, and ran that through a particle emitter. The resulting outlines were superimposed on top of the video, creating a supercool dance party.
